Pastor's Message

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might
become the righteousness of God.”
2 Corinthians 5:21

ESPN Commentators spent hours analyzing it.

Newspaper columnists have spilled their ink over it.

Armchair sports fans have blogged all there is to blog about it!

What am I speaking about?

The “Big Trade!”

At first it was “on.” Then it was “off.” Then it was “on” again.

Finally the trade was complete.

Jason Kidd officially joined the Dallas Mavericks, elevating their opportunity to join the NBA elite in the playoffs this May.

It has been interesting to overhear people’s conversations regarding this trade. Some believe that this trade is one of the BEST to ever take place in sports history. Others are not so sure. There are analysts who believe too much was given up. Some suggest that too much money was paid. Perhaps one commentator summed it up best when he said, “Trades are tricky business. One has to determine if the sum paid out is worth the gain received.”

Perhaps that is what is going on in the verse above.

Do you recognize Paul’s words?

I believe that these words are reflective of the greatest TRADE ever made!

This was a trade that did not take place on a basketball court.

There were no analysts around to analyze it. The newspaper columnists of the day seemed uninterested in covering it. After all, this was a trade that took place in the most unlikely of places. It occurred on a hill, next to the garbage dump;, Golgatha.

For a brief second in time, creation itself paused, seeming to give recognition to the significance of what was happening on that blood-stained cross.

Scripture tells us that the skies drew dark. Broad daylight turned into night. The bowels of the earth rumbled and a solitary voice cracked through darkness of sin:

“It is over!”  He cried.  Sin has been paid for…in full!

And when He died the TRADE was made complete.

Our Savior took our sin and in return, we have received eternal life.

As we continue into this reflective season of Lent, it is my prayer that you will take time to consider the significance of this trade. Ponder the truth that this trade represents. Understand anew just how graciously our Lord comes to us each morning ready to take from us our burdens, our pain, our heartaches. And in exchange, what does He offer? A peace that passes our mortal understanding.

This week I look forward to joining together with you under the cross of Calvary…where the greatest TRADE in history took place for you and me.

In Christ,

Pastor Luke

Rev. Dr. Luke Biggs
