Pastor's Message

Then the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Matthew 4:1

First it was just cold.

Then there was ice.

Collisions occurred in the “heavenly realms.” Warm air masses crashed into cold. The jet stream twisted and turned…

And, then there was FOG!

I noticed it almost immediately. As I pulled out of my driveway, intent on making my morning trek to the office…FOG!

Its’ really scary stuff when you think about it!

  • You can’t see through it!
  • Headlights seem to make it worse!
  • It causes you to slow down, because you really don’t know what lies ahead!
  • Wrecks happen in it!
  • It causes people to make wrong turns…or worse yet, to get lost!

Come to think about it, “Is there really anything good about FOG?”

Then I remembered the passage above. In some senses, Jesus’ entrance into the wilderness was sort of “foggy.” Like fog, wilderness is something that we usually have trouble with. After all: You can’t see through it! Wrecks happen in it! Wilderness can cause people to make wrong turns…and, yes, some people even get lost in it! Yet, wilderness, as “foggy” as it is, is an essential part of life.

Next week, you and I will have an opportunity to join in an ancient tradition involving wilderness. On February 6, LENT will begin with the celebration of Ash Wednesday. Over a forty day period you and I will have the opportunity both to remember Jesus’ time in the wilderness and to relate His experience to our own.

For me LENT is a time to slow down. It is a time to admit that I can’t see through all that lies ahead in my life. It is a time to contemplate…to ask God to help me keep from making wrong turns or getting lost. It is a time when I examine some of the wrecks that have happened in my life, and ask Jesus to help keep me from such in the future. LENT is a time to ask for help in getting through the foggy wilderness that seems such a part of our lives today.

I hope that you will join me each Wednesday evening for dinner at 6pm and worship at 7pm.

Come and be blessed by the One who has cleared the way for our wildernesses today.

In Christ,

Pastor Luke

Rev. Dr. Luke Biggs
